We’ve touched on safety at gas stations before, but let’s be more specific. Most of the time, as gas station customers, we pull up to the pump, get out of our cars and leave our car doors unlocked with purses, packages, etc. in plain sight. This gives a thief the perfect opportunity to drive up next to your car, open an unlocked door, grab any valuables within reach, then quickly drive off. It can happen in a matter of seconds.
So, first, pick a gas station that is well-lighted and preferably has video surveillance cameras at the pump. Pay attention to your surroundings during your entire visit, and take note of anyone walking around. Don’t be distracted by your cell phone. Keep valuables out of plain view in your vehicle. And always remove your keys from your ignition, and lock your car doors while you are pumping gas.
